Wednesday, October 2, 2024 India is all set to introduce facial recognition technology (FRT) for international air travel, marking a significant step forward in simplifying the airport experience. The pilot project is planned for June 2025, according to Digi Yatra Foundation CEO Suresh Khadakbhavi. This move aims to enhance efficiency, making the check-in and security process smoother and quicker for travelers.
At the heart of this initiative is DigiYatra , a mobile-based platform that securely stores passengers’ ID and travel documents. By using facial recognition , the platform will eliminate the need for passengers to show their physical IDs at multiple checkpoints, creating a seamless and contactless journey from check-in to boarding. This system promises to reduce wait times and minimize human interaction, offering a more efficient and stress-free airport experience.
Currently, DigiYatra is available only for domestic travelers, but it has already transformed the way people navigate airports within India. Passengers can enter airports and pass through security using just their facial biometrics , bypassing the usual document checks. This service is already operational at major airports such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai , and several others.
