New Delhi: An Indian-origin woman in the UK, Jaskirat Kaur, 33, has pleaded guilty to the murder of her 10-year-old daughter, Shay Kang, who was found dead with stab wounds earlier this year. Kaur, also known as Jasmine Kang, entered the plea at Wolverhampton Crown Court today. Shay Kang was found dead at her home on March 4, with stab wounds to her chest.

West Midlands Police arrested Kaur shortly after the body was found at around 12:10 pm. At first, Kaur denied the murder charge but later admitted to the lesser charge of murder during the court proceedings. Sentencing set for October 25 Judge Michael Chambers has scheduled her sentencing for October 25 and Kaur is expected to be present in court for the session.

Prosecution counsel Sally Howes KC told the court that the guilty plea to murder was acceptable to the Crown, with no dispute over the facts of the case. Brickhouse Primary School, where Shay was a student, expressed their sorrow at the tragic loss with a statement at the time: “Shay was a bright, happy, fun-loving child who was well-liked by all, and she will be very sadly missed by everyone.” Tributes and fundraiser for Shay Kang Tributes including toys, cards and balloons were left in Shay’s memory and parents of children who attended the same school organised an online GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover her funeral expenses.

The fundraiser’s message read: “As you may be aware she had no family except her mum. The purpose of this is to come together as a community to help raise funds for her funeral and to also help with flowers, head stone etc. She didn’t deserve this at all and the best we can do is make sure she flys (sic) high in the most beautiful way.
