India 78th Independence Day: 'Viksit Bharat'
TODAY, Aug. 15, 2024, India celebrates its 78th Independence Day, marking its freedom from British colonial rule in 1947.This year's celebrations focus on "Viksit Bharat," which translates to "Developed India," aligning with the Indian government's vision to transform the nation into a developed country by 2047, coinciding with the centenary or 100 years of independence. The celebrations start with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi hoisting the national flag and addressing the 11th consecutive Independence Day from Red Fort in the nation's capital, Delhi, at 7:30 a.m. (10 a.m. in Manila).The day is marked by patriotic processions, cultural events and flag-hoisting ceremonies in schools, colleges, government offices and other places to commemorate the occasion. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has made significant strides in various fields. However, the country's resilience and ongoing reforms suggest a promising future.History of independenceFollowing the British victory at the Battle of Plassey in 1757, the English East India Co. began exercising control over the subcontinent.East India Co. ruled India for 100 years until it was replaced by direct British rule (often referred to as the British raj) in the wake of the Indian mutiny in 1857 to 1858, also called Revolt of 1857.The Indian Independence Movement began during World War 1, led by Mohandas Gandhi, who advocated for a peaceful and nonviolent end to British rule.The movement transcended under Mahatma Gandhi's leadership in the early 20th century.The Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons on July 4, 1947, and subsequently, Independence Day was attained on August 15 that year, brought about by the Indian Independence Act.It also marked the anniversary of the partition of the subcontinent into two countries: India and Pakistan.
