Thiruvananthapuram: The inconveniently placed lifts at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station are causing inconvenience to several passengers . The railway station, one of the busiest in the state, which has three foot overbridges linking the platforms, however has lifts only at one foot overbridge located near the parcel office at the far end of the platform. The passengers who enter the station from the main entrance are forced to walk more than 500ft to reach the lift.

This is inconveniencing senior citizens and those who are not comfortable to use escalators. Porters take senior citizens who opt for wheelchairs on the lifts to other platforms. If the lift is not working, they have to roll the wheelchair across the tracks to reach the platforms.

The nearest foot overbridge from the main entry of the station has only an escalator at platform one. Lack of adequate signage about lifts often forces the people, who are new to the station, to climb the stairs. Passengers from trains that arrive at platforms 2&3 and 4&5 suffer if they do not want to use the escalators.

Using a lift is also a hassle because the lift has the capacity to carry only 13 passengers. Passengers who alighted from Ananthapuri Express recently had to wait for a long time to board the lift because some people refused to get down even when the lift was showing overload. “I face this problem every time I travel to the city.

I prefer the lift because I will be carrying heavy luggage. There is no discipline. Everyone is in a rush to leave.

Often an argument breaks out as to who should get down when a lift is overloaded. They should have installed a lift with a larger capacity,” said K Valli, a passenger from Chennai. Railway Passengers Association state committee general secretary S K Jayakumar said, “The railways should ensure that there are lifts and escalators at convenient locations to access all platforms when the redevelopment of the railway station is completed.

” A railway official said a long walkway with shops on either side will be built, and there will be lifts and escalators to access all the platforms when redevelopment is completed. The foot overbridge near the parcel office has lifts because it covers the entire station from Thampanoor side to the Powerhouse Road side of the station.
