Gorringe’s A 19th-century Italian illumination presented by Pope Pius IX to Paul Cullen, Archbishop of Dublin, in 1866 is going under the hammer at Gorringe’s in Lewes, England on Tuesday, October 8. The illumination, a depiction of the Annunciation bordered by ornate scrollwork, is housed within a fancy Florentine carved giltwood frame (116cm high) and estimated to sell for between £1,500 and £2,000 (€1,800 to €2,400). Paul Cardinal Cullen (1803 to 1878) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, and the first Irish cardinal.
He spearheaded the Romanisation of the Catholic Church in Ireland and crafted the formula for papal infallibility at the First Vatican Council. Archbishop Cullen also started the practice of Irish priests wearing Roman collars and being called “Father” (instead of “Mister”) by their parishioners. See gorringes.
