The pizza giant has plastered new advertising boards across the windows of the former Army and Navy Store in London Road, Westcliff, promising the new takeaway is “coming soon”. The Army and Navy store was a mainstay for 73 years selling combat clothing, bomber jackets, outfits for cadets and outdoor activities, before closing in February last year. Long-standing owner Brian Burns retired and the site has remained empty ever since.
Now, Domino’s has launched a recruitment campaign and is teasing details of a free pizza giveaway to the first 100 customers when the store opens. Matt King, chair of the Milton Community Partnership group which works to preserve the heritage of Westcliff and promote the area, said: “It’s better to have a shop used than empty. “I’m not sure we need more takeaways in the area, though, as we have a lot already.
“We’ve got a great selection of independent retailers and restaurants in Hamlet Court Road and local area, so it is really important to support and encourage these. “This is good for the local economy and encourages and supports the wonderful diversity in our area.” Labour councillor for culture, tourism and business Matt Dent agreed that the future of the store as a Domino’s beats it remaining boarded up and empty.
