Tuesday, July 16, 2024 The National Art Gallery’s “Rantau: IMT-GT Exhibition” is now open, celebrating IMT-GT 2023-2025 with regional art until December 1, 2024. The National Art Gallery has launched the “Rantau: IMT-GT Exhibition,” which will be on display from today until December 1, 2024. This exhibition is part of the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle Visit Year 2023-2025, also known as IMT-GT 2023-2025.

The opening ceremony was officiated by YBrs. Mr. Shaik Rizal Sulaiman , Chairman of the National Visual Arts Development Board (NVADB), at the National Art Gallery.



This exhibition showcases the artistic expressions of visual artists from Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand, capturing their thoughts and feelings about nature, family relationships, life struggles, past stories, survival, daily routines, and everyday life. The collaboration among these three countries through the exhibition highlights themes of togetherness, regional unity, and cultural diversity. The “Rantau: IMT-GT Exhibition” features the involvement of five curators, two art collectives, four solo artists, and two artist duos.

Indonesia is represented by guest curator Bayu Genia Krishbie from the Galeri Nasional Indonesia, the Rumah Ada Seni art collective from Padang, West Sumatra, led by Yusuf Fadly Aser with nine members, the Sikukeluang Collective from Pekan Baru, Riau, led by Adhari Donora with six members, and the duo Arifa Safura and DJ Rencong from Aceh. Malaysia’s contributions include curators Faridah Hanim Abd Wahab and Adina Quraisa Ibrahim , guest writer Liu Cheng Hua , and artists Chong Yan Chuah , Khairul Izzudin , and Shamin Sahrum , who have backgrounds in architecture and large-scale works. Their pieces explore the theme of Rantau as well as their personal experiences with ‘merantau’ (traveling).

Thailand is represented by curator Suebsang Sangwachirapiban from the Bangkok Art Biennale, and artists Nordiana Beehing from Yala, Maneerat Thamnarak from Chumphon, and Arichama Pakapet from Songkhla. They play a crucial role in initiating artistic dialogues and fostering relationships within their communities, contributing to the economic and sociocultural development of the region under the IMT-GT framework. The inauguration ceremony was graced by YBrs.

The “Rantau: IMT-GT Exhibition” underscores the National Art Gallery’s dedication to regional art development, international relations, and the promotion of the tourism sector. The public is warmly invited to experience the spirit of togetherness and celebrate cultural diversity at the “Rantau: IMT-GT Exhibition” at the National Art Gallery, on display until December 1, 2024.
