Pune: The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company ( MSEDCL ) has recently stated that the digging work without following protocol by several civic authorities across the city has led to damages in the underground cables which resulted in power outages. Such damages would not cause major issues in the summer, but during monsoon, moisture entered these cables and thus damaged them and resulted in power cuts . In such cases, the power utility company conducts cable testing and repair works such as fixing the broken joints and removing the moisture from the cables.
"MSEDCL has to scramble to make the repairs, but still faces ire from the consumers due to power cuts," a MSEDCL spokesperson told TOI. Data of the utility company revealed that nearly 349 high-tension underground cables were damaged in the last six months because of digging by several agencies for constructing various projects across the city. "It was possible that cables were damaged because of road construction or drainage work, but these were isolated incidents.
It was not correct to say that it happened on a regular basis," PMC official Aniruddha Pawaskar said.
