Iga Swiatek was in awe when compatriot Kasia Niewiadoma won the Tour de France Femmes by just four seconds on Sunday (August 18). With this win on the Alpe d’Huez, the 29-year-old scripted history by winning the race by the narrowest of margins (in both men’s and women’s races). It wasn’t smooth sailing for the Pole as she had to fight hard during the final race to secure the win against defending champion Demi Vollering of the Netherlands. Ahead of the Cincinnati Open, Swiatek reflected on her Olympic campaign. Although the tournament was ‘stressful’ for her, she said she has learned from her experience. It was Swiatek’s second appearance at the quadrennial event, having made her debut at the 2020 Tokyo Games where she played in both singles and doubles but failed to reach the semifinals in both the events.
The 23-year-old was set to play with compatriot Hubert Hurkacz in mixed doubles in Paris, but his injury forced him to withdraw from the tournament. Following the Olympics, the five-time Grand Slam champion skipped the Canadian Open and played at the Cincinnati Open. Although she failed to make it to the final, she will be chasing her sixth Grand Slam title at the US Open which gets underway on August 26.
