Have I Got News For You star Ian Hislop mocked an incident that left him fearing for his life after his taxi window was smashed by what he thought was a gunshot. The Private Eye editor, 64, had been travelling on Dean Street in London Soho, when the glass at the back of the vehicle shattered inside the cab, which he initially thought was down to a weapon being fired. However, police soon dismissed claims of a weapon being fired.
And while at the time, Ian was shaken, he soon saw the funny side of the incident while on the current affairs TV show. He quipped: "I always say at this point I'm glad to be here, but this week I really mean it. There was one high point when a policeman investigating me said 'this may be a silly question, but is there anyone who might have a grudge against you?'.
" And it was at this point Paul Merton jumped in and joked: "I have an alibi." Issuing a statement, Ian thanked everyone for their concern. The statement read: "He can confirm that there was an incident in a taxi yesterday in which a rear window shattered, and the police are investigating.
They were initially looking into the possibility of a shot having been fired but have now indicated that there may be another more innocent explanation for what happened." The police investigation followed up on a call from the taxi driver who reported he was sat still in traffic on Dean Street when a shot was fired at his vehicle, striking the window and breaking it. No one was seriously injured An eye wit.
