A bloke who sampled what's touted as the UK's priciest fish and chips has branded them "bland", insisting his local fryer does a better job. Callum Ryan, 23, treated himself to a meal at Kerridge's Fish & Chips in the iconic Harrods, London, on August 5, shelling out a staggering £37.00 for the dish and an additional £4.

95 for a coke. The content creator hailing from Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, said: "I was really excited to go along a give it a try but I was disappointed. "The food was average and I'd honestly rather go to my local chippy.

It's the most expensive fish and chips in the UK and I'd expect a bit more," he added. "I was a little bit disappointed with how bland it looked and tasted. It was a really nice and cool atmosphere but I don't think it's worth the price — it's just fish and chips at the end of the day.

" Have you tried the most expensive version of a British classic? Email us at [email protected] He was also taken aback by a £1 "cover charge" on the bill, something he'd never encountered before. "I guess it must just be a posh people thing," he said.

A cover charge is a fee added to a bill usually to help the restaurant pay for service or entertainment, such as a live band. Opened by celeb chef Tom Kerridge in June 2021, Kerridge's Fish & Chips faced immediate backlash over its lofty prices. Tom Kerridge had previously defended his pricing on Times Radio, saying: "I'm seen as a man of the people, so when I put fish and chips on for £35, they shout at me for it being expensive.

But the people criticising me don't understand how it's priced." Callum praised the restaurant's vibe and top-notch service, saying the atmosphere was "great" and the staff's service was "10 out of 10". However, he admitted the steep prices would deter him from returning, he commented: "If I had spent a tenner I'd be happy, but I just can't justify it at that price.

" He did rave about the food though, especially the sauces. Callum said: "The sauces, particularly the curry sauce, were amazing. If the price was different it would have been an enjoyable experience.

" The average price for a regular portion of fish and chips in the UK stands at £10.88, according to the KFE Fish & Chips Survey 2024, meaning Kerridge's take costs nearly four times the UK average. Here's how his bill stacked up: Portion of fish & chips - £37.

00 Glass of coke - £4.95 Cover charge - £1 Service charge - £5.24 Total: £48.
