If you’re travelling to Coventry on the M40, you’ve a range of options if you want to stop and take a break. Oxford, Beaconsfield, Warwick , and Cherwell Valley services are all there and waiting for you to pull in and have a rest. The thing is, they’re all very much of a muchness.
You know what to expect. You’ll have a newsagents or a mini supermarket where the snacks are double what they’d be on the high street, you have a melee of people fighting to get to the counters at the fast food venues, you'll have the fruit machines in a dark corner, and when you’re outside, you get a cacophony of lorries, children throwing tantrums, and the din of the motorway as an ambient white noise. Now, it doesn’t have a petrol station on site nor can you get a can of coke, although you can do both of those at the Esso in Gaydon village. It also isn’t free to use. It’s £19 per adult but you get access for the whole year.
What you do get is a clean and well kept building, a lovely cafe, immaculately clean toilets and an entire museum thrown in for free. Perfect to stretch your legs and occupy the kids for a while to break up a long journey. Then there’s the free to access parts which include an enormous car park, a playground, and a large green space for a gentle walk to stretch the legs.
