I once had an American flatmate who insisted that the British could make fantastic toasties, but were hopeless when it came to crafting a proper sandwich. While I might have agreed with her before, the Café Mondo sandwich I had this week proved her very wrong. Mondo Sando’s trendy and tasty sandwiches rose to popularity during their residency at Grove House Tavern in Camberwell .

With support of a Kickstarter, the team has now set up a permanent base about 10 minutes away on Peckham Road in an old fashioned diner-inspired sandwich shop that turns to a dive bar after sunset. According to The Upcoming , co-founders Jack Macrae and Viggo Blegvad take inspiration from the food of “Miyazaki films, Redwall novels and the Beano”. The menu is continuously updated with new and exciting combinations – from your typical mozzarella and tomato to a more intriguing lime, cheese, and elote sandwich, as well as MSG martinis and condensed milk boozy slushies.



I visited their new Camberwell site to test out one of their acclaimed sandwiches along with their iconic deep fried treacle tart. My first impression was that the place was very cool. I decided on their £9 Green ‘Pea sandwich and was warned to grab several napkins.

As an herbivore, the vegan sandwiches I’ve tried in the past have usually been dull and dry so I was delighted by the sandwich’s cross-section. The filling was rich and inviting and the bread was light and fluffy. Breads of successful sandwiches past have ten.
