That's even more true now that "proper ice cream shop" Spoonstruck has opened in a prime location on King's Parade. When Spoonstruck submitted a planning application to Cambridge City Council, it made the bold promise of offering "some of the best ice cream in the UK".

So I had to go down to check it out on its first official day open on Friday (August 23). The shop is now one of at least four selling ice cream on King's Parade – not to mention several other notable ice cream vendors with shops and stalls within a few minutes' walk. It is almost exactly opposite the entrance to King's College, with the beautiful Porters' Lodge reflecting in the shop window.

It certainly made a difference to the experience compared to waiting for 10 or more minutes for a frozen delight at other nearby ice cream shops. The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic, talking me through the flavours and giving me tasters of some of the more unique flavours.

These include ginger and lemongrass, as well as cake batter – both unusual flavours that I haven't seen before. Inside the new shop (Image: Cait Findlay/CambridgeshireLive) Although the testers were delicious, I decided to play it safe and try two flavours I knew I would like. I had one scoop of the plant-based dark chocolate 'Frozert' and another of the strawberries and cream, which is made with local strawberries when they are in season.

A single scoop in a cup or cone is £4, which puts it at the pricier end of Cambridge ice creams. After eating mine, I had a walk around the block to compare the prices to nearby shops, which tend to sell a single scoop for around £3 – if you're just buying one, the slightly higher price won't make as much of a difference, but it could add up if you are buying ice cream for a whole family. It was easy to find a spot to sit on the wall outside King's College to attack the ice cream before it started melting.

The dark chocolate 'Frozert' was my favourite of the two flavours, with a deep, rich flavour that wasn't too sickly, and the same creamy texture you would expect from dairy-based ice cream. In my experience, plant-based alternatives that are a hit flavour-wise can sometimes be a miss in terms of texture, but this scoop scored highly on both. The strawberries and cream was delicious, and knowing it is made from local strawberries makes it even tastier.

Next time I go, I will be more adventurous and try a more unusual flavour, but knowing an ice cream shop can make classic flavours well is an important starting point. Is it among the best ice cream in the UK? I'd have to go on a country-wide taste test to determine that. But this much is clear: it's certainly among the best ice cream in Cambridge.
