STORRS – It’s been 14 years since the UConn football team has had a winning season and 17 years since the Huskies started a season with a record of 7-3 or better, but the team has a chance to accomplish both those feats with a win today at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). The Huskies have used a schedule tailor-made for success to go into today’s UAB game with a 6-3 record. Seven of their nine games to date, including the last six, have been home games, and only two of the nine teams they have played so far currently have winning records.
That strategy has allowed them to gain some momentum and confidence, but now the Huskies must prove that they can win on the road. Their final three regular-season games are all on the road, and they are winless away from Rentschler Field this season at 0-2 with losses to Maryland and Duke. “The only thing that is different for us is that we have a two-hour flight,” Coach Jim Mora said.
“Other than that, the timing of what we do leading up to the game during that last 24-36-48 hours is exactly the same. I told them the field is 120 yards long and 53 wide. We have to be able to focus on our execution between the lines and not worry about where we are playing.
“We have to have a road warrior mentality, us against everybody in the stadium and everybody that doubts us.” See FOOTBALL, Page 9A There are no doubt plenty who are skeptical, because the last time UConn had a winning season was 2010 when they were 8-5 and ear.
