Wednesday, August 21, 2024 Humanitarian Day serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and commitment of aid workers around the world who face life-threatening dangers to deliver critical assistance to those in need. The current global landscape, marred by conflicts such as Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine and continuous unrest in the Middle East, presents extreme challenges for these workers. In 2023, the death toll for humanitarian workers hit an all-time high, and 2024 appears to be following a similarly tragic pattern.

At the forefront of these efforts, the European Union has been a bastion of support, providing essential aid across over 110 countries for more than three decades. This year, the EU has allocated a substantial €1.8 billion to its humanitarian aid budget, maintaining its role as one of the top global donors.



The EU’s aid efforts span multiple sectors, including food security, shelter, healthcare, water, sanitation, and emergency education, ensuring that help reaches the most vulnerable populations without discrimination. Key EU humanitarian initiatives include: To further protect aid workers, especially local ones who often bear the brunt of direct threats, the EU launched the Protect Aid Workers initiative in February 2024. This program offers legal support and rapid financial grants to those affected by attacks or security incidents, providing a critical safety net.

As we commemorate Humanitarian Day, it’s crucial to honor the selfless men and women on the front lines and acknowledge the sustained efforts of the EU and its partners to ensure that humanitarian aid reaches every corner of the globe where it is desperately needed..
