Saturday, March 15, 2025 The 2025 tourist season for Santorini has encountered a troubling start, with delays in regulatory decisions threatening the island’s crucial tourism industry. As the season was set to begin within days, the absence of a joint ministerial decision regarding operational guidelines has already led to significant losses for Santorini . The uncertainty surrounding these decisions has raised alarms across the island, where tourism is a vital part of the local economy.

Impact on Cruise Ship Arrivals According to the Thira Municipal Port Authority , five out of the ten cruise ships scheduled to dock in Santorini in March have been rerouted to other destinations. These cruise ships, which typically carry thousands of passengers each, are a cornerstone of the island’s tourism economy. They contribute immensely to Santorini’s revenue through visitor spending, port fees, and other related services.

The Cycladic island is known for receiving a considerable number of cruise arrivals each month, but the lack of clarity surrounding docking permissions has severely disrupted this flow. Industry insiders have expressed concerns that the remaining five ships, which are still waiting for approval, could follow suit and cancel their visits as well if the government does not make a decision within the next 48 hours. It is evident that every lost cruise represents a substantial blow to the local economy, with Santorini heavily reliant on such large-scale tourism.
