Monday, August 26, 2024 Booker’s Restaurant and Bar, a well-known eatery in West Philadelphia, is recognized not just for its food, service, and lively atmosphere, but also for its innovative approach to empowering employees. Co-owners Tracey Syphax and Cheri Syphax are leading a groundbreaking initiative to transform their staff from employees into potential employers and business owners. This effort is a unique move within the restaurant industry, where the focus typically remains on training staff to deliver excellent service.

However, at Booker’s, the goal extends beyond service, as employees are given the tools and knowledge to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys. Tracey Syphax, the author of From the Block to the Boardroom , and CJ Meenan, the founder of XPStartUp Labs LLC, have been collaborating for the past seven years to bring entrepreneurial opportunities to communities affected by the war on drugs. Together, they founded Reentry Ventures & Street StartUps, initiatives aimed at fostering entrepreneurship among incarcerated individuals and those impacted by systemic inequalities.

Their latest endeavor is to bring this same entrepreneurial spirit to the employees of Booker’s Restaurant and Bar, particularly during National Black Business Month. The program, offered free to employees, focuses on essential business skills such as financial management, marketing, and business development. Additionally, participants are given the chance to shadow Tracey and Cheri Syphax in their respective businesses, gaining practical experience and mentorship.

This hands-on approach not only enhances the skills of the employees but also prepares them to potentially start their own businesses in the future. This initiative is designed to benefit not only the employees but also the broader community. By equipping staff with entrepreneurial skills, Booker’s is helping to create future business owners who can generate jobs and contribute to the local economy.

Tracey Syphax emphasized that by investing in their employees, they are also investing in the future of Philadelphia, showing that the potential for success lies within each team member. CJ Meenan, who has worked closely with Syphax on these entrepreneurial initiatives, praised the program as an example of industry leadership. He pointed out that the Entrepreneurial Mindset Workshop not only enhances Booker’s as a business but also strengthens the abilities of its team members, empowering them to excel as employees or to start their own businesses someday.

By investing in their staff, Booker’s is actively contributing to the growth and betterment of the community. The impact of this initiative is expected to extend far beyond the walls of Booker’s Restaurant and Bar. As employees gain the skills and confidence to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, the program is likely to inspire similar efforts across the city, fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and community empowerment.

The commitment of Tracey and Cheri Syphax to this cause reflects their deep belief in giving back to their community and supporting the economic development of Philadelphia..
