The US Space Force was split off from the United States Air Force in December 2019, meaning that the United States' youngest uniformed service branch is now five years old. The Space Force has achieved many milestones in this first half-decade of existence and is ever-growing to adapt to the new space domain of warfare. The world has entered a new age of Great Power Competition, and both the Air Force and Space Force are restructuring to remain the best they can be in the new environment.

For a while, the US Space Force was the only independent space force in the world until the Chinese established the People's Liberation Army Aerospace Force in April 2024. From space support element to warfighting service The Space Force is focused on satellites, cybersecurity, and other space-related defense missions. With an annual budget of around $30 billion, it has around double the financing of the Coast Guard (around $14 billion), although only a fraction the size of the budget of the US Air Force (around $215 billion).



If the Space Force was an independent military, it would be around the 15th largest (with a similar budget as Australia and Canada). As space is ever more becoming a domain of future conflict, Breaking Defense reported that the Space Forces' top brass are becoming more open about the service's plans and classified offensive capabilities to take out Chinese and Russian satellites in orbit in a future conflict.
