L ucy Ewing was Style’s fashion director for more than a decade, producing some of the wittiest, most unexpected and yet lovely fashion shoots to grace the magazine’s pages. While Ewing’s own style was understated — flat shoes, Comme des Garçons trousers and a string of pearls — her pictures reflected an uncompromising individuality. Utilising unlikely locations — rodeos, scrapyards, supermarkets — and props such as blow-up superhero dolls and cats matched to the colour of the outfits, she created images that did more than simply showcase designer clothes.
Instead they told their own story. Who else would have thought to shoot a young Ellie Bamber in a hotel room surrounded by men in gorilla suits? In a shoot at the V&A Museum, Ewing included visitors.
