Monday, January 27, 2025 Many travelers today are increasingly aware of the importance of responsible travel, though understanding how to implement this into their trips remains a challenge. Research by Phocuswright reveals a disconnect between travelers’ intentions and actions, while a survey conducted by Booking.com found that 43% of travelers feel guilty about making unsustainable travel choices.

Despite these challenges, several regions around the world are leading the way in balancing tourism with environmental preservation and community support, offering examples for others to follow. Azores, Portugal: A Leader in Sustainable Tourism The Azores, a stunning archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, continues to be a model for responsible tourism. Known for its dramatic volcanic landscapes, world-class whale-watching, and unique wine regions, the Azores boasts a strong commitment to sustainability.

With 39% of its land protected and 40% of its energy coming from renewable sources, it is a prime example of how tourism can be harmonized with conservation efforts. The region’s dedication to marine conservation has earned it the distinction of being one of the Whale Heritage Sites, certified by the World Cetacean Alliance and World Animal Protection. In 2023, the Azores extended its protected waters by creating the largest marine protected area in the North Atlantic, covering 30% of its waters.

The destination also achieved Gold EarthCheck certification in 2024, meeting over 260.
