Monday, January 27, 2025 Prayagraj has seen a significant boost in its air connectivity, especially ahead of the highly anticipated Mahakumbh, the world’s largest religious gathering. The demand for flights to the city has surged, leading the Union Civil Aviation Ministry to take measures to ensure adequate seating capacity and prevent an overwhelming spike in airfares. Surge in Air Traffic and Increased Demand The Ministry of Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), approved an additional 81 flights to Prayagraj in January.
This increased connectivity means Prayagraj is now linked directly to 17 cities, up from just eight in December 2024. This expansion comes in response to the high demand from devotees and tourists planning their visits for the Mahakumbh festival. With 132 flights operating from various Indian cities, Prayagraj’s connectivity has been significantly improved, making it easier for pilgrims and tourists to access the city.
The ministry’s strategic intervention aimed to keep airfares in check while increasing flight capacity to ensure smoother travel. Airfare Surge Amid High Demand Despite efforts to manage costs, airfares have seen a sharp increase. According to reports, a non-stop flight from Mumbai to Prayagraj can now cost up to ₹30,000 one way during peak travel times in February, reflecting a remarkable 107% rise in prices compared to the previous year.
