Chowdhury, who shared his experience of staying at one of Kenya’s most expensive resorts with his wife, received an overwhelming response from users, many of whom were curious about the cost of such a lavish vacation. However, one comment, in particular, caught Chowdhury’s attention, prompting him to address misconceptions surrounding his trip in a post titled, "It's time for some myth-busting.
" The comment that sparked his response read: "Only multimillionaires like you can afford such vacations." The implication that only the wealthy could afford such an extravagant holiday didn’t sit well with Chowdhury, who decided to break down the actual costs and methods he used to make the trip affordable. In response to the claim that he must be a multimillionaire to afford such a trip, Chowdhury clarified that he is a salaried employee who pays taxes like everyone else.
He emphasized that he travels frequently for work, which helps him earn even more points to redeem for luxury stays and flights. By booking five nights at 106,000 points per night, he only had to pay for four nights using points, drastically reducing the overall cost of his stay. To earn these points, Chowdhury transferred 326,000 American Express (Amex) points to his Marriott account.
He also highlighted that Amex frequently runs campaigns offering a 30% bonus on point transfers, which allowed him to accumulate the 424,000 Marriott Bonvoy points necessary for his luxury stay. Chowdhury further explained that if he had bought the points directly, Marriott often runs promotions where points can be purchased at 65 paise per point. In such a scenario, he could have spent Rs 2.
75 lakh to buy the points and still saved Rs 24.75 lakh on the stay. He was quick to point out, however, that he didn’t buy the points; he earned them through regular spending and work-related travel.
Aanirban at JW Marriott Masai Mara, Kenya Chowdhury’s post also took a humorous turn as he addressed body-shaming and other assumptions about his lifestyle. He joked that his job requires him to write code, not model or look a certain way, and that anyone can achieve similar travel experiences by being smart with points and rewards programs. Chowdhury encouraged others to learn how to maximize their points and rewards, rather than dismissing luxury travel as something only the wealthy can afford.
