At a time when work-life balance has become a hot topic of discussion among working class, Steven Guo, a 24-year-old entrepreneur, decided to move to Bali from the United States, a decision which he claims has helped him lead a quality life. Guo told CNBC that he only works 30 hours week and yet manages to earn a whopping $254,000 (Rs 2.15 crore) a year.
"Bali really is a place where my work-life balance finally makes sense," he told the outlet. "Mornings are mostly for running my business, (and) afternoons are for surfing, exploring the landscapes or enjoying the vibrant culture here," he added. The Bali-based entrepreneur's journey began at the age of 12 when he was exploring ideas to play games online.
"I wanted to host servers so that me and my friends could play on it. Turns out, other people decided to start playing on it as well, and because of that, someone offered me $50," he told CNBC. This idea changed his life as he realised that one can make money through internet.
"I didn't realise you could make money off the internet," he recalled. Guo made $10,000 that summer. However, things did not go that well for Guo as his first venture "failed miserably" and he ended up losing all his money.
"But I learned a really valuable lesson, which was: marketing is extremely important for any business," he said. The setback did not deter Guo's from pursuing other business ideas. He wanted to learn all about running a business but he was not very interested in academics.
