MT. STERLING, Ill. -- It was an old-fashioned slugfest in the mud when Brown County hosted Casey-Whitfield in Saturday's Class 1A second round playoff game.

The game was a scoreless tie after three quarters of play and a missed field goal by the Warriors early in the fourth quarter. Casey-Whitfield proceeded to score two fourth quarter touchdowns on a four-yard quarterback keeper by Nolan Clement and a punt return to the end zone by Ryan Richards, giving the Warriors a 16-0 win over Brown County to sting the hearts of Hornets fans. "Defensively, we did a really nice job," said Hornets head coach Tom Little.

" There was a constant rain during Saturday's contest, with it picking up in the fourth quarter. "For the conditions, both teams did well," said Little. "A couple of times, it was on the ground for both teams.

Overall, I thought the kids really handled it well for as messy and sloppy as it was." Momentum seemed to be on Brown County's side after Casey-Westfield missed an early fourth quarter field goal. Instead, Brown County soon fumbled the ball in favorable field position for Casey-Westfield, leading to Clement's touchdown after the Hornets held a Warriors team that had averaged over 36 points per game scoreless to that point.

"For what (the Warriors) had off.
