Thursday, August 15, 2024 The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), in collaboration with Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP), is excited to announce the return of the Hong Kong Cyclothon on Sunday, October 13th. This year’s event goes beyond cycling, transforming into a dynamic sports-themed carnival that celebrates health and wellness. With newly enhanced routes and added attractions, the Cyclothon invites participants to experience the beauty of Hong Kong’s cityscape while enjoying a day of active fun.

Two of the Cyclothon’s signature events, the 50km and 32km rides, have been revamped to offer an even more thrilling experience. The 50km ride now includes an additional tunnel, bringing the total to four tunnels and three bridges, all typically closed to cyclists. For the first time, participants in the 32km ride will enjoy spectacular views of Hong Kong’s harbour from the Ting Kau Bridge, alongside the well-known Stonecutters Bridge.



Both routes will conclude in the vibrant West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD), providing a picturesque finish for the cyclists. To elevate the excitement, HKTB is introducing a brand-new carnival at WKCD, featuring a blend of sports activities, local culinary delights, large-scale photo opportunities, and a cycling-themed market. The festivities will also extend to Tsim Sha Tsui East, where a live audience will share in the celebration.

This event is set to ignite a wave of sports enthusiasm across the city, inviting both locals and visitors to partake in the fun and festivities! Mr Dane Cheng, Executive Director of HKTB, said, “The Hong Kong Cyclothon this year includes leisure fun, healthy rides and professional races. In addition to the two most popular rides, with enhanced routes, a sports-and-leisure-themed carnival is a highlight of this year’s event. I believe the edition this year will attract more locals and visitors to join and experience the dynamic vibe of the city.

A wellness and healthcentric lifestyle has become an emerging trend for in-depth tourism. Registration for the popular 50km and 32km rides opens this Friday, August 16th, with over 6,000 slots available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Riders will have the chance to explore Hong Kong’s iconic cityscape, navigating major roads, bridges, and tunnels. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, all participants must pass a technical skills test, unless they took part in the 2022 or 2023 Cyclothon or are recognized athletes by the Cycling Association of Hong Kong, China. This year’s Cyclothon will feature the first-ever carnival at WKCD Wonderland, transforming the area into a vibrant celebration of health, fitness, and community spirit.

After completing their rides, cyclists can join the public in enjoying photo-worthy installations, a cycling-themed market, yoga, stretching, and dancefit workshops, as well as a variety of refreshments. The excitement will be broadcast live from Tsim Sha Tsui, featuring events like the CEO Charity & Celebrity Ride and the City Cycling Challenge around the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) – Sun Hung Kai Properties Men’s Open and Women’s Open. Families are also invited to join in the fun with the return of the Family Fun Ride, a unique opportunity to cycle along a 1km segment of Salisbury Road, typically closed to cyclists.

Open to children aged six and above, the Family Fun Ride allows families to experience the joy of cycling together. Registration for this event also opens on Friday, August 16th. In line with SHKP’s charitable mission, participants are encouraged to donate between HK$100 and $500 when registering for the event.

All fees from the CEO Charity & Celebrity Ride and Family Fun Ride will go to the Community Chest of Hong Kong, with SHKP matching the donations to support those in need. The City Cycling Challenge around Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong) – Sun Hung Kai Properties Men’s Open and Women’s Open will return to the bustling streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, where over 100 professional cyclists from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) will compete for the championship. The races will take place along a 3.

7 km lap route on Salisbury Road and the Hung Hom Bypass, with the Men’s Open covering eight laps and the Women’s Open two laps. Spectators can cheer on the cyclists from various audience zones set up along the race route. To accommodate the event, road closures and traffic diversions will be implemented starting at 1 am on October 13th.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board will provide details in advance, and the public is encouraged to plan their travel accordingly. This year’s “SHKP Hong Kong Cyclothon” promises to be more than just a race—it’s a celebration of sports, community, and the vibrant spirit of Hong Kong. However, this year, there will not be an event-specific jersey provided. Participants who complete the 50km and 32km races will be awarded a special souvenir medal, a refreshing cool towel, and an electronic certificate as a token of their achievement. For first-time participants and those who last participated in the Hong Kong Cyclothon in 2018 or earlier, a technical skills test is mandatory, unless exempted.

This test is organized to ensure the safety and preparedness of all cyclists. The tests will take place on the weekends of September 7-8 and 14-15 at the Cycling Park, Po Kong Village Road Park. Those on the waiting list are also required to pass this test.
