Holiday beauty secrets of the stars: Top experts reveal exactly what to pack, what to leave behind - and what hotel beauty product you should NEVER touch By Antonia Lenon For Daily Mail Published: 07:21 EDT, 5 August 2024 | Updated: 07:21 EDT, 5 August 2024 e-mail View comments This was meant to be the year that the annual holiday packing battle – between women and the flimsy sandwich bag – came to an end. Forget choosing between foundation and serum, or making a mess attempting to decant moisturiser into a tiny bottle. We were promised we could breeze through airport security with up to two litres of liquids in our hand luggage.

Well, that was the plan, as airports were meant to roll out high-tech, 3D scanners and do away with the 100ml liquid rules. However, chaos and long queues as airports struggled with the new technology meant the Department for Transport has ordered a return to the liquid limit for hand luggage. So how do you pack all your holiday beauty and skincare without breaking the rules? Three experts in beauty, skincare and haircare share the essential liquids to take, which to switch for solids and what should you definitely leave behind in the bathroom.

.. SPF is a must when travelling to hot destinations MAKE-UP by Holly Willoughby ’s make-up artist Patsy O’Neill USE A CONTACT LENS CASE Don’t buy 100ml bottles to take a favourite liquid away, be creative with whatever you already own.

I reuse the container that camera film comes in but you could use a well-cleaned contact lens case. OPT FOR SOLIDS Swap out liquid foundation for a full-face concealer stick, like the Ilia Beauty complexion stick (£48, spacenk.com ), or if you prefer a liquid base, make it a BB cream that has SPF in it, like Ultra-Violette’s.

SUQQU is a brilliant Japanese brand that makes solid lip and cheek colour pots – they even double as eyeshadow (£36, cultbeauty.com ). Go for for a solid perfume too, like Glossier’s bestselling Glossier You (£32, glossier.

com ). Opt for a solid perfume when only travelling with hand luggage, like Glossier's You perfume Ditch the lipgloss and focus on hydration and protection for your lips with an SPF lip balm, ultraviolette do one for £17 ( ultraviolette.co.

uk ). Go for an ultra-moisturising balm with a tint like Fresh Beauty’s Sugar lip balm in the evening (£22, fresh.com ).

My holiday hero is Weleda skin food (30ml, £8.95, boots.com ), it’s the most powerful healing, moisturising balm, brilliant for sunburn for everyone in the family.

TRY TANNING DROPS Instead of a massive bottle of fake tan, bring tanning drops – powerful and compact, you add them to your moisturiser for a sun-kissed glow. Whind face drops (30ml, £30, whind.com ) can be used daily to build up a tan or try Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi drops if you prefer a tan you can remove with your make-up (30ml, £24.

75, lookfantastic.com ). EXPERIMENT WITH MINIS If a product is too big to take away with you, see it as an opportunity to experiment by trying a travel mini.

Vieve’s Glowbe Trotter kit, (£29, vievebeauty.com ) includes three of their bestselling products or try Rare Beauty’s liquid blush (£14, rarebeauty.com), this sits beautifully on the skin giving a watercolour flush.

Your favourite perfume might come in a tiny tester bottle – Miller Harris have a discovery set of eight perfumes for £16 (a standard bottle is £180!). Penhaligon’s travel atomiser is a brilliant investment, you can refill it with your mini sprays and it’s much more stylish than a plastic bottle (£35, penhaglions.com ).

Dr Angela Tewari recommends applying SPF twice a day SKINCARE by dermatologist Dr Angela Tewari PUT SPF FIRST The number one product to take away with you is SPF. It’s vital to take suncream with broad UVA and UVB protection and apply it twice a day. I like Avene’s tinted variety (50ml, £16.

11, superdrug.com ) or CeraVe’s facial moisturising lotion with SPF 50 (52ml, £13.20, boots,com).

If you prefer a spray try La Roche Posay’s anti-shine mist (50ml, £14, boots.com ) or Soltan’s water-resistant mist (100ml, £5, boots.com ).

...

AND ADD MOISTURE SECOND Staying hydrated is really important for your skin on holiday. Clinique has a three-piece travel set which includes a moisturising facial spray (30ml), overnight mask (30ml) and moisturiser (15ml) to keep skin hydrated (£32, lookfantastic.com ).

Or just take an empty bottle with a spray nozzle and fill it up with water while you’re abroad. DON’T GET BY WITH SOLID CLEANSER When it comes to liquids, I would say that cleanser is an important one to make space for. Unless a solid bar cleanser is stored in an airtight and moisture free container it will get soggy, soft and be difficult to keep clean.

Being outdoors in sunshine will make skin feel drier, so I would recommend using a hydrating cleanser with a mild acid to restore skin turnover, like CeraVe’s cleanser with 0.5% salicylic acid (236ml, £14.50, boots.

com ). This comes in at over 100ml so you’ll need to decant it into a smaller bottle. Or try Bioderma’s smaller micellar water which can remove make-up as well as cleansing the face (100ml, £4.

39, superdrug.com ). LEAVE SKINCARE BIG-HITTERS AT HOME If you have a multi-step routine that involves strong active ingredients (like hyaluronic acid, vitamin c serum and salicylic acid) I recommend that you leave them at home.

Focus on hydration and protect your skin as much as possible by wearing a hat and sunglasses. I like to do a chemical peel when I return home and get back into my usual routine. Don’t try a whole new set of products just for the sake of a holiday. And unless you’re staying somewhere very, very nice it’s better to not use the shampoo and conditioner that’s stuck to the wall of the shower as it’s unlikely that it’ll be high quality. Even worse, it might be a combined body wash and hair care product.

DO TAKE ACTION AGAINST CHLORINE If you’re going to be swimming in a chlorinated pool a clarifying shampoo is important to remove metals and toxins from your hair, then a deep conditioning treatment to restore hair. Two amazing products I use are Olaplex’s No4 shampoo (100ml, £14, lookfantastic.com ) and super thick No8 Bond intense moisture mask (100ml, £28, lookfantastic.

com ). NO DRY SHAMPOO IN HOT WEATHER I’d recommend leaving dry shampoo behind. If you’re going somewhere with a warm climate your scalp will secrete more oils and sweat and trying to replace cleanliness with dry shampoo just doesn’t work.

A hero product for humidity that I use that on celebrity clients for events like the Venice Film Festival is the Colour Wow anti-humidity Dream Coat spray (50ml, £12.50, uk.colorwowhair.

com ), which you blowdry into your hair. You won’t even notice there’s product in it. For an evening look try combing hair back into a slicked bun with a product like Fekkai Brilliant Gloss Perfecting Crème (60ml, £12, lookfantastic.

com ), this will give an on trend wet look while saturating the hair in a creamy, luxe finish which means zero frizz. TRY A LIGHTER OIL WHILE AWAY If you’re partial to a hair oil I recommend bringing a dry oil. These are lightweight on your hair and tend to leave behind minimal residue, try Davines Oil Non Oil (250ml, £22.

25, uk.davines.com ).

This is over 100ml, but it’s easy to decant into a smaller bottle. If you’re styling a blowout a little oil once you’re finished can pump up the shine. I’ve played around with a new solid shampoo and conditioner from Blu & Green which was launched by James Pecis, who works in the industry.

They come in tablet form, smell amazing and lather up nicely. If you’re looking for an environmentally conscious brand to try this is one I’d recommend (both £26, bluandgreen.com ).
