Sunday, October 6, 2024 Hitachi partners with Nvidia to launch an AI-powered railway maintenance service, revolutionizing safety and efficiency with advanced data analysis and predictive technology. Hitachi Ltd. has introduced an innovative railway maintenance solution powered by artificial intelligence from U.
S. semiconductor leader Nvidia Corp., aiming to attract global railway operators.
The new service, HMAX, debuted at the InnoTrans 2024 railway technology fair in Berlin in late September. HMAX utilizes cameras and sensors installed on trains to collect operational data, which AI analyzes to identify potential issues and optimize part replacement schedules. This marks Hitachi’s first commercial use of AI in railway maintenance, following its March partnership announcement with Nvidia.
The system has already been implemented on select routes in Britain and Italy. HMAX leverages Nvidia’s advanced graphics processing units to quickly analyze sensor data—such as heat and vibration—gathered from trains. This real-time analysis enables more frequent data collection compared to traditional methods, reducing unnecessary part replacements and enhancing safety.
