Wednesday, December 25, 2024 Himachal Pradesh experienced heavy snowfall across several districts, leading to the closure of at least 177 roads, including three national highways, as reported on Tuesday. The snowfall brought both challenges and opportunities, with increased tourist inflow creating hopes for a white Christmas. The snowfall was recorded in the districts of Kinnaur, Lahaul and Spiti, as well as in higher reaches of Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Chamba, and Sirmaur.

Suburbs of Manali and Dalhousie also experienced snow, while mid and lower hill regions saw light rain. About 174 roads, including three national highways, were closed due to the snow. Major routes such as those connecting Attari to Leh, Sanj to Aut in Kullu district, and Khab Sangam in Kinnaur to Gramphoo in Lahaul and Spiti were blocked.



The State Emergency Operation Centre reported that 89 roads in Shimla, 44 in Kinnaur, and 25 in Mandi were among the most affected. Tourists in approximately 500 vehicles stranded near the Atal Tunnel were safely rescued by late Monday. However, the administration also reported accidents resulting in four fatalities and several injuries due to skidding vehicles in snowy conditions.

The snowfall disrupted electricity supply in several areas, with 683 transformers out of service. Residents and tourists were advised to follow official warnings and avoid driving in snow-affected areas. The snowfall has significantly increased tourist activity, with hotel occupancy in Shimla sur.
