Wednesday, August 7, 2024 The Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) is excited to announce the return of the HIGHLANDER Adventure, organized by the world-renowned HIGHLANDER international hiking association. Scheduled from February 7-9, 2025, this premier long-distance hiking event invites hikers and adventure enthusiasts to challenge themselves on the stunning trails of Jebel Jais, home to the UAE’s most extensive hiking network, spanning 80 kilometers. This event offers a unique chance to explore heritage sites, ancient Emirati settlements, and active farms, providing a glimpse into Ras Al Khaimah’s rich history and cultural diversity.
Participants will experience how local communities have thrived in this rugged terrain for centuries. Building on the success of past events, the 2025 edition presents three signature hiking formats. HIGHLANDER Pegasus, a 40km three-day backpacking challenge, takes place from February 7-9 and is inspired by the mythological winged horse and the northern sky constellation.
HIGHLANDER Orion, a 25km two-day trek from February 8-9, is named after the prominent winter constellation in the northern hemisphere. Both formats require participants to carry all necessary gear, including camping and cooking equipment, as they immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Ras Al Khaimah, camping under the stars each night. The new addition to this year’s event is HIGHLANDER Lyra, a 20km single-day hike on February 9.
Named after the harmonious Lyre from Greek mythology and one of the smallest constellations, this format offers a balanced mix of challenge and enjoyment. It’s perfect for those looking to build confidence, skills, and stamina for more extensive hikes, requiring only essential day hiking gear. All three challenges are supervised by the organizers, fostering a sense of community among international adventure lovers and outdoor enthusiasts.
Participants will traverse historic settlements and active farms, highlighting the cultural and historical richness of Ras Al Khaimah. In line with Ras Al Khaimah’s vision of becoming a leading sustainable tourism destination, the HIGHLANDER Adventure promotes enjoying the great outdoors with minimal environmental impact. The event will include educational sessions on ecology, emphasizing the importance of preserving the Emirate’s natural beauty and cultural heritage.
