HELENA — We have reached the halfway point of the Montana high school football season and across the five classifications, 18 undefeated teams remain. Class B has the fewest with just two unbeaten teams remaining — Manhattan and Malta. 8-Man has the most with seven undefeated teams left, highlighted by last season's state champion Fairview, as well as Belt, the 2023 runner-up.
One of the teams knocked from the ranks of the undefeated this past weekend was Eureka, which lost on a late field goal to Missoula Loyola. In Class A, No. 1 Frenchtown handed fourth-ranked Bigfork its first loss (41-18), while fourth-ranked Jefferson in Class B notched its second win over a ranked opponent this season with a 37-12 triumph over Three Forks.
Fort Benton bounced back from a loss against Belt recently, to hand Choteau its first loss of the season and in 6-Man, Bainville played its way into the rankings following a 46-25 win at Savage, the previous No. 3 team. This week, the number of undefeated teams will dwindle even further, the question is by how much? Eight of the 18 teams with perfect records will face a team with just one loss and five of those teams are ranked.
There are also two matchups of undefeated teams in 8-Man football this week. Following Week 5, there wasn't a ton of movement in the 406 MT Sports rankings, although there are new top-5 teams in 6-Man and Class B. However, the top two teams are the same in each class and here's where things stand going into an important W.
