There’s a bit of a hike to get to a beautiful British beach that has been named one of the best in the UK but the effort is well worth it for the serenity awaiting you at the end. As soon as the sun comes out the coastlines around the UK are flooded with tourists and locals desperate to enjoy some downtime relaxing with family and friends. The most popular seaside towns see an influx of visitors, many of whom will head straight to the beach , armed with buckets and spades and hoping for a dip in the sea.

Areas can become overcrowded, noisy and uncomfortable, particularly for those who just want a little peace and quiet while gazing at the waves lapping against the shore. You may think the best beaches will always be heaving during the warmer months but there are some secret, hidden gems out there if you know where to look. Down in Cornwall lies the secluded and picturesque Lantic Bay beach , located between Fowey and Polperro.

The Independent recently named it as one of the best in the UK when it comes to avoiding the crowds. Its white shingle sand and turquoise waters are set in a large bay with high cliffs. It’s these that mean you’ll have to work a little harder to get to it.

There is a car park but you’ll have to take a hike down to the beach itself through some woodland and uneven ground, including a slope and some steps. You’ll be glad you made the effort though as peace and tranquility awaits. Boats visit the bay thanks to the deep shelving of the seabed, which also makes it good for swimming.

Care should be taken though as there’s no lifeguard and there can be rip tides. Recent visitors to the beach have raved about its beauty and it has a 4.5 rating on Tripadvisor.

One called it, "Paradise in Britain" writing: "Amazing beach, well worth a visit. There is a good walk to get there from the car park, which involves a steep descent to the beach. My advice is don't wear sliders like we did wear trainers, as difficult walk back.

" Another hailed it as "beautiful" and posted: "Lovely walk to view Lantic bay, we didn’t walk down to it. Scenery was stunning. It’s a National Trust property, car park is a short walk to see the bay.

" While a third loved the sea there: "Beautiful bay with a lovely swim. Steep slope down, but well worth the effort. The water was beautiful," they wrote.
