Thursday, August 22, 2024 The Phoenicia Malta, a distinguished Mediterranean five-star hotel, has recently joined the prestigious Historic Hotels Worldwide®. This official program honors the world’s most exceptional historic lodging establishments. To be eligible for inclusion, a property must meet rigorous standards: it must be at least 75 years old, located near a historic district, landmark, city center, or notable historical site, recognized locally by a heritage organization or situated within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and display historical artifacts, artwork, or photographs.

Established in 1947 and situated at the entrance of Valletta—a UNESCO World Heritage Site—The Phoenicia Malta exemplifies these qualifications. Guests of this luxurious hotel enjoy the Phoenicia Spa & Wellness, which honors Valletta’s architectural heritage. The hotel’s Bastion Pool Bar & Restaurant features an infinity pool with views of the historic Bastion walls, erected over 450 years ago by the Knights of St John.

The hotel’s expansive seven-acre garden offers panoramic views of Marsamxett Harbour and showcases a collection by renowned Maltese artist Edward Caruana Dingli. “Historic Hotels Worldwide ® is honoured to induct The Phoenicia Malta, the island’s first five-star hotel built in the 1930s and opened in 1947,” says Lawrence Horwitz, Executive Vice President of Historic Hotels of America and Historic Hotels Worldwide . “We commend The Phoenicia Malta and its leadership team for their careful historic preservation work, stewardship and vision that will allow future generations of travellers to experience this unique historic destination.

Within a few hundred steps, visitors can explore ancient temples, marvel at Baroque architecture and stroll through the narrow streets of Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.” Membership in Historic Hotels Worldwide® not only highlights The Phoenicia Malta’s commitment to heritage preservation but also places it within an elite network of over 340 historic hotels spanning 49 countries. This affiliation celebrates the rich history of these properties and promotes cultural tourism, with the program linked to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the USA.

Since its inception in 2012, the program’s website, HistoricHotelsWorldwide.com, has served as a resource for travelers seeking accommodations with deep historical significance. “This is a very proud moment for all of us at The Phoenicia Malta,” says the hotel’s General Manager, Robyn Pratt .

“Earning top-level recognition from Historic Hotels Worldwide not only celebrates our hotel’s rich heritage, unique location and storied past, but also inspires us to strive for a future of continued excellence – something we are committed to doing daily.”.
