This image is the perfect encapsulation of a European summer holiday - white beach, clear water, a cute village built into the hillside. You'd be forgiven for thinking this is a Greek Island or Italian coastal town. But nope, this gem is actually in Türkiye.

The underrated country has been seeing more Aussie visitors recently. And it's a lot cheaper and less crowded than 'traditional' European destinations. Read through to learn why.

As the cost of living continues to go up but our appetite for travel refuses to wane, Aussies are looking for cheaper destinations we can visit. And if you're keen for a European trip without breaking the bank, Türkiye is the best option. Türkiye's long Mediterranean coastline boasts pristine beaches with some of the clearest water you've ever seen.

As it's such a huge country, the diversity of things to do and see is incredible. For example, the Eastern Express train from Kars to Ankara is a 24-hour journey through dazzling landscapes. Once you're there, you won't be spending too much.

A beer costs the equivalent of about $4.50, a cheap meal out is about $13, while a mid-range hotel runs at about $100 a night. Even the most touristy sites in Türkiye are still relatively low-key when compared to the crowds in Italy and Greece.

The bustling city of Istanbul is a must-visit, and a great place to start your trip. Come hungry - the street food scene here is amazing. As the largest city in Europe, you'll never get bored.

Hikers and adventurers will also love a trip to Türkiye, thanks to its bountiful nature areas from the coast to the mountains. If you're into hiking, definitely take a trip to Trabzon, an alpine region with stunning lakes that rivals Switzerland. Here you can visit crater lakes, tumbling waterfalls and lush highlands.

Of course, the history within the country is staggering. Visitors can stroll through cobblestone streets of ancient villages that are thousands of years old. Take, for example, the The Library of Celsus.

Built in 135 AD, it remains in surprisingly well-kept condition. Sailing trips are a popular way for backpackers to experience the country, while luxury yacht charters are also on offer for travellers with more cash to splash. With amazing food, friendly locals, and a wealth of things to do, its one of those holiday spots that you'll want to just keep returning to over and over.

As an added bonus, Aussies can fly directly to Türkiye, without needing to change planes halfway. Turkish Airlines began operating direct flights from Melbourne to Istanbul earlier this year. .
