The ECHO understands the bridge was closed after it got stuck in an 'upright position' A traffic problem caused heavy congestion in Birkenhead this morning. Duke Street Bascule Bridge was shut between A5027 / B5146 and A5139 / A554 / Pump Road, causing delays in the area. The ECHO understands the bridge was shut after it got stuck in an 'upright position,' according to eyewitness reports.

Members of the public told the ECHO there was heavy traffic in the area and diversions were in place. One person said: "I was on my way to work and the traffic across the red bridge [Tower Bridge] was busy. The traffic coming across to Wallasey from Birkenhead looked worse but it was still busy.

I could see all the diverted traffic and my taxi driver said it was due to the Duke Street bridge being stuck." Duke Street Bascule Bridge has since been reopened in both directions and traffic is returning to normal between A5027 / B5146 and A5139 / A554 / Pump Road. The bridge is operated by The Mersey Docks and Harbour Company, part of the Peel Ports Group.

The ECHO has attempted to contact Peel Ports for an update. The ECHO also contacted Merseyside Police for more information. For the latest news and breaking news visit http://www.
