Monday, January 20, 2025 The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued winter storm warnings affecting approximately 70 million people across the US , from the Northern Plains to New England and into the southern states. These warnings come as a powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snow, frigid temperatures, and dangerously low wind chills to a large portion of the country. The NWS forecasts up to 10 inches (25 cm) of snow in parts of New England, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine, starting Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday.
Major cities such as Boston, New York City, and Philadelphia are expected to receive several inches of snow. New York City Mayor Eric Adams has urged residents to use public transportation to allow snowplows to clear streets efficiently. Warming centers have been opened, and residents facing heating or utility issues are encouraged to call 311 for assistance.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for all 21 counties in the state, with 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cm) of snow expected in the northern region. Municipalities across the state have activated emergency plans, with warming shelters available for residents in need. Behind the storm, an Arctic blast is expected to plunge temperatures across much of the Eastern U.
S. early next week. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that wind chills as low as -55°F (-48°C) are already being recorded in parts of the Northern Plain.
