Chairman Abraham Mathai calls for the revocation of Yunus’s Nobel prize due to his perceived inaction on warnings issued against celebrating Durga Puja. MUMBAI: Human rights organisation Harmony Foundation has slammed Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus , who heads the interim govt in Bangladesh , for not doing enough to rein in the fundamentalists and radical forces who are threatening the minorities there. In a statement, the Foundation's chairman, Abraham Mathai , has said that the radicals in Bangladesh are so emboldened that they have allegedly threatened the Hindu minority in the country against celebrating Durga Puja .
"As the Durga Puja festival draws near, radical organisations have warned the Hindu minority community not to publicly celebrate Durga Puja or participate in the immersion of idols," said Mathai. "Is this what is expected of a leader with international recognition whose weakness has emboldened the radical elements? How can he, given his stature, remain noncommittal in such a grave situation, putting civil and human rights in jeopardy?" He alleged that Yunus's lack of decisive action to stabilise the situation in Bangladesh appears to be "indicative of his tacit approval of the actions of the Islamist extremist groups ." He said that the protests at the United Nations headquarters in New York, against him for failing to safeguard the rights of the Hindu minority community should provide the spark by setting the stage demanding that the Swedish Academy withdra.
