The Hammond Garden Club has selected the garden of Joseph and Christie Mezzic of North Pine as Garden of the Month for August 2024. The garden has the advantage of being on a corner defined by a wrought iron fence. Thus the flowers and shrubs are located both near the house and just inside the fence.

The foundational plants include lorepetalum, white crepe myrtles, white gardenias, Mexican petunias, candelabra trees and white and pink hibiscus. On a lower level we find a great variety of plants, including plumbago, iris, bougainvillea, lantana, zinnas, dwarf Mexican petunias, shrimp plants and cockscomb. Also of interest are the ground covers that lie below the bigger plants are sweet potato vine and wild peanut.

One area features edible herbs, such as red holy basil, blueberry sage and bee balm. Christie said that she gets most of her plants from friends and strangers who are willing to share. The result is a beautiful and interesting mélange which illustrates that a professional garden service and a large investment of money are not necessary for a motivated domestic gardener.
