It was a tight-knit group supporting Kingston and the Islands Green Party candidate Zachary Typhair on Thursday night as Ontario voted. Typhair, just 24 years old, was surrounded by family and friends along with federal Green Party candidate for Kingston and The Islands Fintan Hartnett. As election numbers rolled in, Typhair finished the night with 1,114 votes, 2.
18%. For Typhair, he said it’s an election outcome he was proud of. “It feels great,” he said following the vote.
“It definitely shows that the Greens are going in the right direction. We would have loved to carry Perry Sound, but change always comes slow and sometimes it’s inch by inch and we’ll get there.” Typhair and Hartnett were also pleased to see the Green Party get two seats in the House of Commons.
“We knew we were heading into a Conservative majority,” Typhair said. “Now it’s about working on the local level and ensuring that we fight the Ford government any way we can when it comes to cuts and maybe they will be a little bit more progressive because our education systems are horrible right now,” said Typhair. “I really wished we took another seat, we didn’t.
But we hammered the two seats we had,” said Hartnett. Typhair, running in his second provincial election, said one of the main differences between this year and the previous election in 2022 was the low voter turnout. “We’re looking at the numbers and less than 16 per cent voted and that’s very sad,” said Typhair.
