EXCLUSIVE: Rising Greek filmmaker Konstantina Kotzamani is best known for her medium-length projects that have screened across the European festival circuit, including Cannes and Venice. Kotzamani is now back with a new project, What Mary Didn’t Know , which screens this week in Locarno. We can share a first-look clip from the film above.

Kotzamani directs from a screenplay she also wrote. The cast features Tora Sandström, Yasin Houicha, Silas Strand, Carl Johan Merner, Åsa Jonson, and Myrto Kontoni. Producers are Emmanuel Chaumet, Stelios Cotionis, Antigoni Rota , Marie-Gabrielle Peaucelle, Kyveli Short, Frida Mårtensson, and Jerry Carlsson.



Co-producers are Stelios Kammitsis, Alexis Anastasiadis, and Konstantinos Vassilaros. Ecce Films is handling international sales. The film’s synopsis reads: A cruise ship, the Neoromantica, crosses the Mediterranean.

Among pensioners who yearn for Marriage Margaritas, Mary, a teenage girl, wanders the casino and hits her own jackpot in love. Under the whimsical Aegean moon, Greek myths meet Arabian Nights . The film was shot in Swedish, French, Arabic, and English.

Kotzamani’s other credits include Washingtonia (Berlinale, 2014), Yellow Fieber (Locarno, 2015), Limbo (Cannes Critic’s Week, 2016), and Electric Swan (Venice, 2019). She has won the Hellenic Film Academy award for best short film three times and has been twice nominated by the European Film Academy for the best short of the year. Her films have been the theme of retrospectives in festivals like BAFICI, Istanbul, and Festival du Nouveau Cinema Montreal.

She is currently working on her debut feature-length film , Titanic Ocean . Check out the first-look clip above..
