Grand Designs turned into a bloody drama for its new series celebrating its 25th anniversary. Host Kevin McCloud let slip that a crew member sliced his finger off when trying to get a perfect shot using a drone. He said the drone was flying back to a boat off East Yorkshire but its GPS landing spot moved.
Kevin revealed: “It bounces off the mast, heads for the water...
Steve tries to grab it and it slices his finger off and the drone crashes into the sea. The footage is gone, so we just try to make it up the old-fashioned way.” He explained that when drones first came out, they were “like miniature helicopters” and would make buildings’ windows shake.
At the birthday bash for the C4 property show, Kevin also told how bosses originally wanted it to be called Bricks and Mortar. Despite the drone mishap though, he said he loves his job: “There’s something very powerful in the moment trying to find a narrative path through the project. I love it, and I’m quite addicted to that process and don’t have to worry about who pays for lunch.
