Monday, October 7, 2024 As the global push towards sustainability and reducing carbon emissions accelerates, the shipping industry—and more specifically the cruise industry—has emerged as a crucial sector in need of low-carbon fuel solutions. In response, Glander International Bunkering, a subsidiary of Bunker Holding, has teamed up with Cepsa, a leading Spanish energy company, to supply second-generation biofuel (HVO) to cruise vessels operating in the Mediterranean. The partnership, which was established earlier in 2024, marks a significant step forward in the decarbonization journey for the cruise industry.
Since June of this year, Cepsa has completed four successful HVO deliveries to a cruise ship at the Port of Barcelona , demonstrating the viability of second-generation biofuels as a cleaner alternative to conventional fossil fuels. The fuel is made from ISCC EU-certified raw materials and has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% throughout its life cycle. Cepsa and Glander International Bunkering’s joint efforts to supply HVO to cruise ships highlight the growing trend of sustainable fuel adoption within the maritime sector.
This partnership is aligned with the broader industry goals set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) , which is encouraging the use of lower carbon fuels to meet CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) requirements and other regulatory initiatives aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry.
