The glamorous Olympic swimmer was thrust into the news by reports that she was removed from the athletes village at the Paris Olympics over her 'inappropriate conduct'. Paraguay chiefs though reportedly told French media that there was 'no big drama' over how she left the village - despite adding that she made other athletes and the country's entourage feel 'uncomfortable' as she acted in an 'individualistic' way.
However, she reportedly infuriated her bosses long before the Paris Olympics, after she allegedly claimed that she would prefer to represent the United States over the South American nation. In a report from Spanish outlet AS Sport , Camilo Perez, the president of the Paraguayan Olympic Committee, issued a warning to Alonso over her comments. 'There is no universality there. She came here (Paris) as a Paraguayan. She has to train a lot more to represent USA, her times have to be much better.
' Alonso qualified for the Olympics through the universality system - which is designed to increase the diversity of participating nations in the Games. The 20-year-old failed to get out of the first round of the 100m butterfly, finishing sixth and narrowly missing out on qualifying for the semi-finals. Alonso swam at a time of 1:03.
09 in her heat, which the slowest of those who made the semi-finals was Team GB's Keanna Macinnes at 57.90. Perez's comments seemingly won't matter unless Alonso decides to make a U-turn on her decision to retire from the sport.
Alonso confirmed her decision to retire early in a statement on social media last week. The youngster's comments about wanting to swim for the United States were reported by Paraguayan publication HOY . Alonso lives in the United States where she attends the Southern Methodist University near Dallas, Texas (Alonso's return to the US pictured in her Instagram account from Sunday) Alonso claimed that she is the victim of 'lies' and 'false information' after reports that she was kicked out of the athletes village by Paraguay over her 'inappropriate conduct' Alonso said: 'I want to represent the United States more', before adding 't hey threaten me that they are going to publish a statement, that I am going to leave because of universality.
'If I support my sport it is thanks to my sponsors, they want to humiliate me and say 'it is not a big deal that you are leaving because of universality'.' She added that she preferred to return to college in Texas because of the tension she experienced about qualifying for the World Aquatics Championships. Alonso said: ' Instead of supporting and saying 'damn, we trust the athletes', not like 'you're going for the World Cup, we don't care', that's why it's not a pleasure to represent Paraguay and if it were up to me, I would go back to college.
' The Paraguayan lives in the States, where she attends the Southern Methodist University near Dallas, Texas, and also swims for the Dallas Mustangs. In an Instagram story on Sunday night, she revealed that she was back in the United States, as she posted a video of her in a car with the American flag flying outside. After her exit from the swimming, she had been seen walking around in Paris in her own choice of outfits rather than official uniforms provided by Paraguayan team chiefs.
Paraguay's Olympic Committe reportedly told French media that there was 'no big drama' over the way that she left the athletes village Alonso regularly posted photos of her visits during the Games and bumped into Rafael Nadal (right) She had also been spotted hanging out with other athletes -including taking a selfie with Rafael Nadal - and was said to be distracting her teammates who were still competing in the Games. Alonso even checked into a hotel in the French capital and visited luxury stores and restaurants, posting photos to her 600,000 followers on social media. Larissa Schaerer, the head of mission for the Paraguay team said that Alonso was 'creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay'.
Alonso responded to reports that she was kicked out of the athletes village saying she was the victim of 'lies and false information'. Speaking to Le Parisien, a representative of the Paraguay Olympic Committee reportedly said 'She withdrew from swimming and therefore left. She was never excluded.
'As she stopped, she began to behave in an individualistic way and not as a member of the team. 'That's what made the other athletes and the delegation uncomfortable. That's all.
