Things can get wild in the early weeks of the Rutland Herald/Times Argus power rankings. These are the first rankings of the year. You can be certain that in the succeeding weeks teams will move up and down the rankings, some teams will drop out and surprises will brand themselves as new-found contenders.

High school hoops is exciting and unpredictable. The unpredictability does not appear to apply to Division IV where West Rutland rules the roost. But in Division I, CVU and St.



Johnsbury, the teams that met in the state championship game last season could get back to there in 2025 but they have pursuers like Mount Mansfield, Burlington. Essex and possibly others not on our radar right now. D-II has the look of a scramble with North Country and Fair Haven red hot contenders for the trip to Barre Auditorium, but again in this division, contenders will be lining up.

North Country and the Slaters met in the 2024 title game in Barre with Fair Haven digging themselves out of a huge early deficit to win 55-50. Then, there is Division III where Hazen and Windsor, the two teams to meet in last year’s final game, are the only D-III teams in the first week’s rankings. That could change.

Could it be Randolph that joins the chase and presents a threat to teams like North Country and Fair Haven in the rankings? Or could it be Thetford? Randolph and Thetford meet head on Jan. 7 to possibly provide some clarity. Here is Week 1 of the Rutland Herald/Times Argus power rankings for girls b.
