1 2 Vadodara: Former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev attended the condolence meet of former Team India coach Anshuman Gaekwad in the city on Thursday. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah also attended the prayer meet organized by Gaekwad’s family. Gaekwad, a former India cricketer and coach, died of blood cancer on July 31.

Gujarat DGP Vikas Sahay, city police commissioner Narasimha Komar, Vadodara IG Sandip Singh, royal scion Samarjit Gaekwad, and Radhikaraje Gaekwad were among the attendees, along with former India cricketers Kiran More, Balwindersingh Sandhu, Atul Bedade, and ex-Mumbai Ranji skipper Shishir Hattangadi. Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) treasurer Sheetal Mehta, CEO Snehal Parikh, ex-cricketers Mangala Babar, and Rajkuvardevi Gaekwad were also present. “He was my opening partner and we became friends too.



Together, we would discuss how to face fast bowlers the next day. All of us knew he was unwell, but then, you always hope for the best. It’s a big blow for me,” Gavaskar said.

The BCA officials, selectors, various committee members, Congress as well as BJP leaders paid respect to Gaekwad. Son of former Indian cricket team captain D K Gaekwad, he began his international cricketing career in a Test match in 1974 against West Indies. A feisty batsman, Gaekwad played 40 Test matches in which he scored 1,985 runs.
