The hydraulically-driven cannon is designed to deliver a high rate of fire, destroying a wide range of ground targets. Designed by General Electric, the type has been produced by General Dynamics since 1977.

The 30-mm rotary cannon sticks out of the nose of the USAF Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly referred to as the Warthog. The aircraft was designed to provide close air support (CAS) to friendly ground troops by attacking enemy targets, including armored vehicles, tanks, and forces. The Warthog is also utilized as a forward air controller, directing other aircraft in attacks on ground targets.



According to the Air Force , “The A-10C Thunderbolt II is the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces. They are simple, effective and survivable twin-engine jet aircraft that can be used against light maritime attack aircraft and all ground targets, including tanks and other armored vehicles.” A-10s are currently permanently stationed in around 11 airbases in the US and abroad, although this number is dropping.
