Saturday, November 23, 2024 Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal resumed operations yesterday afternoon following a major security incident that caused widespread disruption and evacuation. The incident, which occurred on a busy Friday morning, disrupted travel plans for thousands of passengers and resulted in significant delays and cancellations. Sussex Police have confirmed the safe resolution of the issue, allowing the terminal to reopen fully by 3:45 PM.

The incident began at 10:55 AM when airport security detected a “suspected prohibited item” in a passenger’s luggage during routine checks. The discovery triggered an emergency response, including the immediate deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. As a precautionary measure, Sussex Police ordered the evacuation of the entire South Terminal, impacting both passengers and staff.



The EOD team quickly assessed and neutralized the suspicious package, handing control of the terminal back to Gatwick Airport’s management. A subsequent investigation determined there was no ongoing threat. Sussex Police have since confirmed that two individuals detained during the investigation have been released and allowed to continue their journeys.
