Gardaí have confirmed that they are investigating a postman over the suspected theft of up to 30,000 letters and parcels. The letters, packages and shredded papers believed to have been taken over the last year were removed from the home of the An Post employee in Dublin by two Garda vans this week. After obtaining a search warrant as part of their investigation into the rise of missing post in a south Dublin suburb , tens of thousands of items were seized.
While most of the post was dated from this year, gardaí are continuing to explore how long the postman may have been stealing the items. Additionally, gardaí are examining if any cash or valuable items were in the post, including letters sent to charities, businesses and clubs. Following the seizure, officers will be looking through all of the evidence captured and cataloguing it.
One potential issue in the investigation is gardaí having to attempt to examine shredded letters, with a shredding machine taken from the man’s home. Any post that isn’t being retained as evidence has been returned to An Post for forwarding to the recipients. A Garda spokesperson said: ‘Gardai are investigating a report of alleged theft of a volume of material from a national service provider, involving a member of staff.
