Prayagraj : After a gap of 18 days, the specially constituted police teams on Thursday claimed to have arrested the gang rape convict , identified as Kalicharan alias Babua (24) of Paswara Mohallah (Mahoba), near Cheoki railway station. The convict was planning to escape to Mumbai. Senior cops had constituted as many as three special police teams to ensure the arrest of the convict who had escaped from high security Naini Central Jail on July 20.

Following his escape, senior jail authorities suspended head warder Balbir Singh and three other warders for dereliction of duties. Additional DCP (Yamuna Nagar) Abhijeet Kumar told TOI that police teams have arrested the gang rape convict who had managed to escape from Naini Central Jail on July 20. He further added that Kalicharan was not using a mobile fearing being trapped by the police after the escape.



Kalicharan was on the run since his escape and took shelters in jungles and deserted points to evade police action in the Prayagraj region. The police teams, however, got a specific input about his location near Cheoki railway station in trans-Yamuna and arrested him. Narrating about escape plan, Kalicharan told police that he was carrying out a recce of the area after being deployed between the inner and outer wall of the Naini Central Jail.

While working in the field, he noticed a tree adjacent to the outer wall and managed to climb on it. Police said that Kalicharan was deployed on field work along with other convicts on Saturday afternoon (July 20) but he was found missing on the same evening during the headcount. Following the incident, an FIR under appropriate sections was registered with Naini police station of Prayagraj district.

A court in Mahoba had convicted Kalicharan for 20 years imprisonment for the gangr ape of a woman. He was brought to Naini Central Jail in March this year and was assigned gardening work on the jail campus on the escape day.
