Sunday, September 15, 2024 Five sailboats lined up side by side caught the attention of many at the 2024 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), a five-day event in Beijing that concludes on Monday. “These boats were designed for different groups, including youth, families, and athletes,” said Guo Yue, race director at the Western Port International Sailing Center. “The sailboat’s beam, mainsail, and spinnaker have been improved for a safer and more enjoyable experience.

” Guo, an avid runner and cyclist, took up sailing in 2017. He emphasized that sailing is not an exclusive sport, as many clubs across China offer equipment and professional training for beginners. Water sports, alongside climbing and mountain cycling, are becoming increasingly popular among outdoor enthusiasts.

“Many universities have set up sailing teams, with wide participation from students. They can also practice sailing skills through virtual races on their phones or computers,” Guo added. At CIFTIS, the Digital and Intelligent Sports Open invited visitors to engage in activities like rowing, blending virtual and real-world experiences.

“Water sports should be seen as a lifestyle,” said Yue Na, a corporate partner at the Western Port International Sailing Center. Chinese athletes have also made significant strides in water sports on the global stage. At the Paris Olympics, Xu Shixiao and Sun Mengya defended their title in the women’s canoe double 500m, while Liu Hao and Ji Bowen secured gold in the men’s event.

Yang Siqi, at just 15, became China’s first surfer to compete at the Olympics, reaching the top 16. “Chinese canoeists won two gold medals in Paris, and surfing has become a viral sport among the youth,” said Tong Lixin, director of the China Water Sports Administration. “Water sports, including diving and motorboating, are growing in China, with all the necessary facilities being locally manufactured.

The industry has massive potential.” Since 2005, Qingdao in Shandong Province has been part of the prestigious Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Hu Yan, general manager of the China project, noted that Qingdao’s participation in the race has enhanced the city’s global profile.

“When the Qingdao team stops in cities worldwide, more people learn about this beautiful Chinese city. Each time the teams visit Qingdao, a series of cultural events energizes the city’s tourism.” In Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province, the local ports have been optimized for water sports, with the Qinhuangdao International Tourism Port collaborating with French partners to develop a sailing training and competition base.

These efforts have increased youth participation in water sports..
